The Way of the Cross - Easter Evangelistic Event in Romania

Adaugat la :  11.07.2019

During the Holy Week, a troupe of 70 amateur actors staged Jesus crucifixion process. The descriptively named representation, The Way of the Cross – Death Is Dead, revealed to the public Jesus sufferings in the most dramatic fashion. This 13th edition found The Road of the Cross peregrinating on the streets of five Romanian cities: Zalau, Oradea, Timisoara, Lugoj and Brasov.

Such a beautiful and realistic representation ! At the crucifixion moment, I thought they nailed him to the cross for real. Congratulations to The Road of the Cross troupe, I am happy they came to Timisoara after such a long time. I really hope at least a few people here feel and understand the message of Easter, that is, Christ is risen.

The most interesting thing about this event is the way of ministering to people. I am honored to be able to serve God in this manner.

I found myself on the verge of tears quite a few times during my acting, despite being told not to cry, as my role implied being somber. I watched what was happening, thinking this is much worse than how it was then.

Ceramic artist Dan Les, The Road of the Cross initiator, himself an amateur actor playing the Saviors role, seeks to remind us the true meaning of Easter through images that go to spectators hearts.

What motivates me is that Romanians come in large numbers. We think we do our job well. This holiday is important for the Romanian Christian community. It is the most important, as it represents Jesus Christs death and resurrection. We are a thorn in the way of the huge steamroller of consumerism. This consumerism represents a risk for Romanians, who could lose their values, traditions, and this holy celebration. I have nothing against the Easter bunny, neither against the fact that retailers benefit from the shopping done around this time of year, although, in other countries, all stores are closed during Holy Week. I believe it is necessary to tell Romanians that this celebration is important. Were doing this in a visual manner. This implies beating and many times we experience failed hoaxes. Taking a knock its no strange thing to me. Many ask us whether its hard or easy. I dont want to complain, to draw attention to myself or to play the victim game. I think many of the ones who came here have been affected. Ive seen children touched and crying. I think parents have the responsibility to go home and explain to their children what actually happened 2,000 years ago.

The performance is realized by a group of believers coming from many Christian denominations as an attempt to demonstrate there is no border between Christians. They are playing biblical characthers roles, such as Jesus Christ, the Roman soldiers, Pontius Pilate, Barabbas, Jesus mother Mary plus other characters forming the crowd, all dressed in the periods clothing.

Through the years spent being part of The Road of the Cross procession, Ive seen peoples different reactions to it. Everyone has his or own way of perceiving this manifestation. Our final goal is proving or presenting in a practical way what Easter really represents. I believe this is beneficial. Why ? Because were lacking information. Sadly, even if some information is available, its not accurate. Through this dramatization, were pointing out the fact that Christ represents everything the Easter Holiday truly means.

Looking from a soldiers eyes, its not easy. For me, this is the first time that I participate in this procession.

I was impressed with what was happening. Im impressed by the people who come to see The Road of the Cross. Some cried. Others were disinterested in the beginning towards what was happening, but, in the end, they came and shook my hand, telling my Ive done something of the extraordinary and that they are expecting to see us the following years.

In Timisoara, the event took place this Wednesday. It started in the Opera Square, and it ended in the Unification Square, where the crucifixion scene was recreated.
